Rain of Fish
In 1900, it rained fish in Olneyville!
Today, meteorologists believe this phenomena was caused by a tornado that touched down on the river, syphoning up an assortment of fish, and subsequently pouring perch and pout onto on Harris Avenue and Joslin Street. At the time, this unusual event stirred up a mixture of wonder and “superstitious dread” from the citizens of Olneyville. Fish were collected as souvenirs or repelled as harbingers of doom, and, in one case, kept as a pet by a saloon at the corner of Broadway and Valley.
